Q. What is family safe browsing?
A. SonMedia SecureSurf classifies as a "family safe" browsing tool because all members of the family can surf the Internet using various levels of safety without running into the danger of encountering objectionable content. Enjoy total peace of mind when your family is online. Each person in your home will only have access to suitable material based on the types of content (characteristics) you choose.
Q. What makes SecureSurf better than other “filters”?
A. SecureSurf is a server-side filter that uses people. We call it Human Review. Bottom line, Secure Surf doesn’t rely exclusively on machines to categorize and / or block content from being viewed by people in your home. We use PEOPLE.
Q. How does SecureSurf work?
A. In order for a child to go to a web site that hasn’t been approved by a SecureSurf Site Reviewer or is blocked due to the profile you set for the child, they have to get your approval to override the protection. We will automatically review sites within 24 hours and categorize them for all users. Server-Side means that this resides on our computer servers, instead of your computers. SonMedia has committed itself and its resources to the continual development and deployment of exceptional family safety solutions.
Q. Our family uses several computers at home. Can we install SecureSurf on all our family computers?
A. It is permissible to install SonMedia SecureSurf on more than one family computer in your home at no additional charge. However, it is a violation of the SecureSurf license agreement to install, copy, or distribute SonMedia SecureSurf to other computers not owned or used by your family. In such cases, these SecureSurf accounts will be closed immediately.
Q. How many different users can I have set up with my SecureSurf account?
A. You can have up to five different users on each Secure SecureSurf!
Q. Can SecureSurf prevent children from giving out personal information, like a credit card number over the Web?
A. Parents can choose not to allow their children to access certain secured Websites that contain online ordering. However, to restrict certain information from being shared from your computer, please see our Keyboard Control safety solution.
Q. How does SecureSurf define what is and is not acceptable to the site?
A. SecureSurf makes no judgment about the acceptability of a site. SecureSurf has established a set of over 30 criteria or characteristics which our Human Review Team looks for when reviewing sites. If a site contains content from one or more of the 30+ characteristics, that site (or portions of that site) is restricted based upon the characteristics selected by parents for each person within the home.
Q. How does SonMedia SecureSurf look at every site?
A. First, SecureSurf utilizes the best technology available to help our site reviewers with their efforts in selecting characteristics for each site. After the review process, SecureSurf also uses unique technology to automatically recheck for sites that are highly unpredictable and likely to change. The tendency of the site is the first step in what helps determine the evaluation process. Every page seen by a SecureSurf Reviewer is completely monitored and judged on total content.
Q. How can SonMedia SecureSurf possibly keep up with all the content on the Web?
A. SonMedia SecureSurf has already reviewed the most popular sites on the Web. Aside from monitoring new pages, whenever a subscriber encounters an un-reviewed page, the URL address is automatically submitted to the "SonMedia SecureSurf Review Team." This is the best means for ensuring that every site is carefully reviewed and fairly assessed. SonMedia SecureSurf could be less meticulous and try to get more sites approved to add volume, but the price of lower conscientiousness would be, ultimately, that objectionable sites slip through the cracks and become accessible, diminishing our purpose.
Q. Does SonMedia SecureSurf replace Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers?
A. No, SonMedia SecureSurf compliments your existing browser, either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator or Navigator. SonMedia SecureSurf is transparent to the end-user. Your Web browser is not modified by SonMedia SecureSurf.
Q. Will this filter out unwanted emails?
A. SecureSurf filter does not act as an email filter! Email offered by other Internet Service and Email Providers (AOL, MSN, Earthlink, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc) are not going to be filtered. SecureSurf does block the ability to “Click-Through” to the objectionable content advertised in the emails. You can find email protection as a SonMedia Online email user.
Q. Does SonMedia SecureSurf filter the content I view when I’m connected to the Internet through another Internet Service Provider?
A. Yes! SonMedia SecureSurf filters content no matter how you get online. With our solution, it doesn’t matter if you use another ISP such as dial-up (phone line) AOL, MSN, or any Broadband access (DSL, Cable) and Wireless (WiFi, Satellite).
Q. How do I know that SecureSurf is working when I’m on the Internet?
A. When you are on the Internet you will see a little “home” icon appear in the lower right hand corner of your desktop (screen). The icon appears because the service is working. If you have installed Secure Surf and do not see the icon when you’re on the Internet, please contact customer support immediately.
Q. What can I do as the Administrator?
A. From the Administration Area, you can manage account features, including add/modify/delete users, ‘allow’ or ‘deny’ viewing of user characteristics, submit Websites (URLs) for review or reevaluation, view date/time of last activity for each user, download your account’s Plug-in (setup file), and obtain an uninstall key. Only an Administrator, using his/her User Name and Password, can access the SonMedia SecureSurf Administration Area.
Q. Can I submit a URL or Web site to be reviewed or reevaluated?
A. Absolutely! The Administrator simply enters the URL that you want the SonMedia SecureSurf Site Review Staff to review or reevaluate and click Submit to send the information to SonMedia SecureSurf.
Q. I have other questions. Where do I go for answers?
A. Please visit our Customer Care Center on the website.
